Moringa is a fast growing and highly productive fruiting tree that grows well in dry conditions. The area of Buton Island where this tree is being planted has been taken over after previous forest clearance by quickly growing grass species and is unproductive for agriculture. The idea is for Moringa plantations and the fruit produced to become a substantial source of employment and income for the local communities with the reforestation funded through the sale of carbon credits on the voluntary market.
